Victorian Greens Leader Samantha Ratnam wants public servants to be able to join a climate strike

Face of Nation : Victoria’s public servants would be able to ditch work to attend a climate strike without getting in trouble under a motion put forward by the Greens.

The motion, to be introduced to state parliament this week, also urges all Victorians to take part in the worldwide climate strikes planned for September 20. Victorian Greens leader Samantha Ratnam says the country is in the midst of climate emergency requiring urgent action.

“We support the right of all Victorians to attend the climate strike this month and to make their voices heard on what urgently needs to be done to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and protect our environment,” she said in a statement on Monday.

“I hope the premier feels similarly and will not penalise any public servants for joining the chorus of voices at Treasury Gardens.” Last week the party moved an amendment to boost Victoria’s renewable energy target from 50 per cent to 100 per cent by 2030.
