Face of Nation : Terminally ill Perth radio veteran Howard Sattler has opened up about wanting to end his life, in a push to legalise voluntary euthanasia. The former 6PR shock-jock has been battling a degenerative brain disease and recently revealed he has months to live.
“The best part of the last three years has been terrible,” the 74-year-old said in a new documentary The Broken Hearted. “I just can’t go on much longer like this. “I don’t want jump off a bridge or anything like that … I just want to take a pill sometime, a nice gentle pill.” The radio king was one of more than 20 West Australians who spoke about their suffering in the film, which premieres in Perth tomorrow night.
Peta Quinlivan, who lost her husband Russell to lung cancer in 2015, says he would have been first on the list if assisted dying was legal. “He couldn’t even look out the window … it was absolutely terrible,” she said. West Australian MPs will have a conscience vote on the issue later this year. If it succeeds, WA will become the second state after Victoria to introduce it. Premier Mark McGowan says the legislation will feature “comprehensive” safeguards, which will be announced this week
