Face of Nation : Detectives will travel across the country to re-interview witnesses as they review the unsolved murder of Hugo Benscher at his Gold Coast home more than 27 years ago. Mr Benscher’s body was found at his canal-front Paradise Point home on the morning of June 21, 1992.

The 89-year-old was found bound and gagged on the floor with a head injury, Queensland Police said in a statement on Thursday. Police believe at the time of the murder there were several burglary and home invasion offences in nearby Gold Coast canal estates. Investigators launched a review into the unsolved case this year and in the coming weeks detectives will travel to NSW, Victoria and Tasmania to re-interview witnesses and approach new ones.

“Police firmly believe that with public assistance, irrespective of the passage of time, the offenders will be brought to justice, giving Hugo’s friends and family some closure,” Detective Senior Sergeant Tara Kentwell said. Detectives are especially interested in speaking with anyone who talked with Mr Benscher at the Gold Coast’s Runaway Bay Yacht Club or knew people who did in 1992.

They’ve also called for more information about a beige Datsun and male driver reported as being seen near Mr Benscher’s home around the time of his murder. A $250,000 reward remains on offer for information, with police hopeful the fresh appeal will lead to a breakthrough.
