Face of Nation : More than 30 firefighters responded to the blaze at Veolia Environmental Services on Churchill Rd, Kilburn, about 10.15am on Saturday.
Environment Protection Authority officers will inspect the site to perform atmospheric monitoring, but MFS Commander Greg Davis said there is no threat to the public.“We believe the fire started through the works of the forklifts,” he said.
“What they were doing was pushing some aerosol cans together, it appears it’s just gone boom and one of the trucks got out that was working. “The other one was involved with the fire. Cans exploded and plumes of smoke could be seen across the northern suburbs as the fire burned.
Commander Davis said water and foam was used to extinguish the outside fire. “Some of those containers were from a previous fire in Victoria … (But) whatever was involved was pretty burnt by the time we got here.” He said the forklift driver was “shaken” but in “good spirits” despite the incident.
