Face of Nation : The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to moderate rainfall for the coming week across the state. The IMD has also issued an advisory for the people to stay away from the Beas river and its tributaries as flash floods could occur during the rains.
Around 29 people have lost their lives due to incessant rains for over a week, and state has suffered a loss of Rs 1.85 crores in eight days.
The state’s Disaster Management Department has been submitting reports every 10-15 days regarding the lost possessions, lives, properties during heavy rainfall. “We act promptly based on these reports, however, the rains have destroyed bridges, roads and houses last year. We had incurred losses to the tune of Rs 1300 crores but the Centre provided us with only Rs 300 crores,” said Omkar Sharma, General Secretary.The state has been put on high alert as the weather forecasts have predicted very heavy rainfall on July 11. As a result, mock-drills will be conducted at state’s important buildings, bus stops, railways stations, market areas and schools to make the people aware about emergency situations during rains and also get them prepared for the same.
