India’s M. C. Mary Kom guaranteed India its first medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships by defeating Colombia’s Ingrit Valencia in the quarterfinals on Thursday. This will be her eighth medal at the World Championships.
Amid vocal support for her by Indian fans during the bout in Ulan Ude, Russia, Mary Kom, seeded third in the competition, appeared calm and assured. After a lukewarm first round, Mary Kom engaged in more combat with her opponent before subduing her via a unanimous 5:0 verdict.In the semifinals on Saturday, October 12, she will take on Cakiroglu Busenaz of Turkey. Cakiroglu, the second seed, defeated Cai Zongju of China. Mary Kom had defeated Jitpang Jutamas of Thailand in the pre-quarterfinals on Tuesday.
