Face of Nation : Hundreds of prefabricated “modular” prison cells will be built in Victorian jails to cope with a surge of inmates. Premier Daniel Andrews says up to 500 of the prefabricated modular single and double bed cells will be installed at prisons across Victoria.
“When it comes to bail, some of the changes we made there has definitely resulted in more people behind bars,” he said on Sunday.
The prefabricated cells were the among the quickest and most convenient ways to increase capacity at prisons, Mr Andrews said. “There is a need for us to be building additional prison capacity,” he said.
The cells aim to reduce construction time frames and costs, according to the Department of Justice. They are not portable but will become permanent once installed, a spokeswoman said.
