Face of Nation : Chinese animal activists found 62 dogs in a backstreet slaughterhouse in Yulin earlier this month. The terrified pooches were dehydrated, malnourished and some showed signs of sickness, while stolen pets were still wearing collars. Shocking pictures and videos show the canines packed into tiny wire cages in the filthy abattoir before being rescued and taken to a shelter.

It is not our culture to steal people’s pets. It is not our culture to eat dogs.”

Every year, thousands of dogs and cats are brutally killed and eaten by locals during the festival to mark the summer solstice. Chinese animal activists found 62 dogs in a backstreet slaughterhouse in Yulin.

It comes in the run-up to the annual dog meat festival, which kicks off on Friday (Image: HSI) Many are strays picked up from the streets but others are stolen pets. HSI’s Dr Peter Li urged China to ban the sick event. He said: “These dogs are traumatised and in need of veterinary treatment, but they are the lucky ones because for them at least the horror of Yulin is over. The rescued pooches will now be put up for adoption in China and the US (Image: HSI)“Sadly, thousands more will still die at Yulin, and millions across China, unless decisive action is taken.

“So we urge the Chinese government to show that it will not tolerate the dog thief gangs who perpetuate this trade, and bring an end to the brutal dog and cat meat trade.” The rescued pooches will now be put up for adoption in China and some will even travel to homes in the US.
