Face of Nation : Footage of a cruise liner narrowly missing a dock has been filmed, after the ship encountered a severe storm in Venice.
The video, which was uploaded on to Youtube and has received more than 50k views in 24 hours, shows the Costa Deliziosa liner being pulled to a dock during a brutal storm while sounding its emergency horn.
During the 3 minute 50 second video, rain and wind can be herd pounding down on the ship as it narrowly misses a luxurious yacht moored at the dock.
It is unclear when the footage was filmed, and if there were any injuries on board at the time.
In a statement sent to news.com.au, a spokesperson from Costa said the storm was a “violent” and “extraordinary” event, however the ship is now back on course.
“The violent, extraordinary and sudden meteorological event that affected the entire North East also hit Costa Deliziosa with violent gusts that caused a detour during the passage in the Giudecca Canal in Venice, carried out as always under the indications of the Port Commander, of the pilot and of the three tugs to which the ship was tied, which promptly assisted the ship in the maneuver,” the statement read.
“The Captain has always maintained control of the ship even in conditions of extreme and sudden difficulty. The ship has resumed its course to the planned destination.”
The incident comes just weeks after a 65,500-ton cruise ship crashed into a much smaller riverboat docked along Venice’s busy Giudecca Canal.
Last month, social media footage showed people running while the 13-storey ship, with horns blaring, ploughed into the River Countess ferry. Four people were injured in the accident, including two Australians.
Following the crash in June, thousands of locals have marched against the “sea monsters”, warning they risk a “massacre” by clogging the city’s narrow waterways and destroying the lives of locals.
An estimated 5000 people took to the docks near Venice’s famous San Marco square to protest “bisons of the sea” dominating the lagoon city that is a UNESCO world heritage site.
Many carried banners reading “ships out of the lagoon” while others took to the canals in small vessels to demonstrate against the large boats they say wreak havoc on Venice’s crumbling foundations.
