Face of Nation : After a gap of nearly three months, Congress on Saturday appointed Rohan Gupta as the new chief of its social media department. He replaces Divya Spandana who resigned from the post after the Lok Sabha campaign earlier this year.

The move is significant as the announcement comes in the middle of campaigning for assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra. According to senior party leaders, the appointment to the post was delayed as the party leadership was focussing on state polls campaign.

On Saturday, the appointment, which was made by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, was communicated through a press release by party’s general secretary in charge of organization, K C Veugopal.

Gupta, who belongs to Ahmedabad, had played a key role as in-charge of party’s social media campaign for previous assembly elections in Gujarat. He is a popular media face and was serving as a national media coordinator of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

With the appointment, Congress is looking to ramp up its social media presence in the campaigning for upcoming state polls. While Maharashtra and Haryana go to polls on 21 October, Jharkhand and Delhi will likely witness elections in the next six months.
