A North Yorkshire mum says her son has been left “too scared to go outside” after being attacked and shot six times by a youth with a BB gun.

The incident happened in Pickering, where there are claims of ongoing problems with anti-social behaviour in parts of the town centre.

The boy’s mum says: “My son was approached by a group of boys in a park who asked him to spell their names.

“He has dyslexia and so couldn’t do that, so they pulled out an automatic BB gun and shot him six times in the legs and face.

“He went to hospital for all the injuries, swelling and bruising. Now he doesn’t sleep, has night terrors, doesn’t want to go to school or leave the house.”

North Yorkshire Police says over the past week it’s been “running high-visibility patrols, to provide reassurance”.

Police say three males were asked to leave the Pickering area last night as part of a dispersal order and were told they’d be arrested if they returned.
