Australia – Senator flags worries over religious discrimination bill

Face  of  Nation  : People saying a marriage is only between a man and woman may not be protected under the government’s proposed religious discrimination bill, according to Illawarra senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells.

Federal Attorney-General Christian Porter has released a draft of the bill and, while preferring to wait for the final drafting before making a decision, Sen Fierravanti-Wells said there were concerns.

“Let me pose a very simple question – there has been a change of legislation that, yes, marriage can be between people of same sex,” Sen Fierravanti-Wells said. “Theologically, if a person says marriage is between a man and a woman because that’s his statement of belief, what happens if that person goes out and expresses that view? What protection is afforded to that person?

The senator said others in the community had told her proposed protections were not good enough. “It’s very clear from my ongoing consultations and engagement with religious leaders that the bills fall far short of properly and fully addressing their requirements for religious freedom and protection,” she said.

“Whilst religious leaders may have theological differences, there is a very strong solidarity among them in their fight to protect religious freedom.” The bill was needed to fulfill the expectations of those who voted for the Coalition in the last election, she said.
