Australia – NSW Labor leader Jodi McKay says suspended general secretary Kaila Murnain’s career within the ALP is done and dusted

Ms Murnain told ICAC that in September 2016 upper house MP Ernest Wong told her Huang Xiangmo – who was a prohibited donor – had donated to the state Labor party and she’d failed to act on that information.

The Opposition leader said Ms Murnain would remain suspended until the end of the six-week ICAC inquiry and then a successor would be appointed. Pat Garcia was named acting general secretary on Wednesday night.

“There needs to be a discussion on the next general secretary, Kaila will not stay in this role, her position is untenable,” Ms McKay told reporters. “On the advice of the (party) lawyers and the decision I’ve made, she’s been suspended until the inquiry reaches its course.

“There are a number of people who still have to give evidence – I want to hear exactly what they have to say before making any further decision.” Ms McKay vowed Ms Murnain would never be permitted to run as a state or federal Labor MP.
