Poll: Elizabeth Warren ahead of Biden nationally, with the two in a virtual tie

0

Face of  Nation  : The two top Democratic contenders are carving out their lead in the sprawling primary field. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former Vice President Joe Biden are in a virtual tie in a new Quinnipiac Poll published Wednesday, with Warren numerically ahead of Biden. This is the third poll in the past week that Warren has inched ahead of Biden, but the first poll nationally.

Warren is at 27% among Democrat and Democratic-leaning voters nationally, according to the poll. Just last month, she was at 19% and trailing Biden by 13 percentage points. Biden is at 25%, according to Wednesday’s poll. He’s dropped 7 percentage points from 32% last month.

Wednesday’s poll follows several early state polling where Warren has jumped ahead of Biden after trailing the former Vice President. Warren is numerically ahead in Iowa and New Hampshire, and is closing in on Biden in Nevada. In all of the polls, Warren and Biden are within the margin of error.

For Wednesday’s poll, there is a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points. Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,337 registered voters nationwide between Sept. 19 to 23, with 561 Democratic voters or Democratic leaning voters surveyed.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is at 7%, up from 5% in August. Sen. Kamala Harris has fallen to 3%. She previously was at 7% last month. No other candidate is above 2% in this poll.

Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy said in a statement that Warren and Biden are “leaving the rest of the pack behind.” “After trailing Biden by double digits since March in the race for the Democratic nomination, Warren catches Biden,” he said. Malloy also points to the excitement Warren is garnering among Democrats and Democratic leaning voters.
