Face of Nation : India’s second-largest railway overbridge is all set to be inaugurated later this month. The Indian Railways has completed the construction of the four-lane cable-stayed railway overbridge (RoB) at Burdwan Junction in West Bengal. Considered to be the second largest in the country, the overbridge will be inaugurated by Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on September 30, 2019.

Ministry of Railways tweeted about it saying, “New 4 lane cable-stayed Road Overbridge at Barddhaman W.B, (under final stage of completion) will be inaugurated by Piyush Goyal on 30th September 2019. This project will set the standards for future fast track construction over busy Railway yard.”

The railway overbridge was completed in just 197 days (6.4 months) without affecting traffic for even a single day. The work on 188.43 metre-high cable-stayed overbridge was kicked off in 2012. Aside from 1.5 metre-wide footpaths on each of the sides parallel to the lanes, the overbridge has 27.7 metres of width so as to accommodate vehicles on four lanes.

The overbridge is constructed at a cost of Rs 300 crore. This project has been completed under a 50:50 partnership between the Ministry of Railways and the West Bengal government. The railway overbridge connects Burdwan town with the two sub-divisions of Kalna and Katwa, and is on the Howrah–Bardhaman main line.
