Face of Nation : A man accused of murdering a sex worker before stabbing another woman in the Sydney CBD has complained to his lawyer that he’s not being given pain medication while behind bars.

Mert Ney, 20, is charged with murder, attempted murder, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, intentionally choking with recklessness and common assault.

The 20-year-old was later filmed allegedly running through the city streets brandishing a bloodied kitchen knife before being restrained by onlookers and arrested. On Saturday, Ney appeared via audio-visual link in Parramatta Bail Court and while his lawyer did not apply for bail on his behalf he did make a request of the magistrate.

Zemarai Khatiz asked the court to make a recommendation that his client be seen “urgently” by Justice Health. “He hasn’t been given his pain medication, he’s asked for it six times now so that is why we asked the court to make an order,” he told reporters.

The court heard Ney had undergone surgery for a “severe” leg injury while in hospital. Mr Khatiz said Ney had also been denied medication for his mental illness. “That’s what my client has informed me,” he said. Outside of court, Mr Khatiz revealed his client intended to defend the charges against him on the grounds of mental illness. “He’s going through a very difficult situation at this time,” he said.

Ney was not required to address the court on Saturday, saying only “yeah” when asked if he could hear the magistrate.
