Face of Nation : Three people remain in hospital while a woman has been killed after a tree crashed into a car northeast of Melbourne amid winds gusting at more than 100km/h.

More than 700 people people called Victoria’s State Emergency Service for help, mostly for fallen trees, as a damaging cold front swept the state on Friday. Rough seas claimed part of Frankston’s pier in southeast Melbourne, with the end of the structure snapping off and floating away.

The suburb copped winds of 95km/h while gusts of 128km/h were recorded at Wilsons Promontory. On Friday morning, a large tree came down on a family car at Fernshaw. A woman died at the scene while two children were taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital, one with life-threatening injuries. The male driver was taken to The Alfred hospital.

Winds are expected to ease on Saturday to between 60 and 70km/h. But it’s still set to be very cold and wet, with falls of 20-40mm forecast for central Victoria and parts of Gippsland. Snow is expected down to 500m over the weekend, while Melbourne is forecast to reach just 11C on Saturday and 12C on Sunday.
